Adam, the First Man

"No...you don't get to end this! I'm fucking Adam! I'm the fucking man, and you're just some fuckin' clown or something. I started everything on Earth! All of mankind came from these fucking nuts! You all should be worshipping me, you ungrateful, disgusting, fucking LOSERS!"
―Adam's breakdown and last words

Overview

Adam was an Angel and the main antagonist of the first season of Hazbin Hotel. He made his official debut alongside his lieutenant, Lute, in the first episode. He was the first human man created and the first human soul to enter Heaven. After becoming an angel, he became the commander of the angelic military force known as Exorcists, and served Heaven as forerunner of the Extermination movement. In the tenth and final episode of the season, he was defeated by Lucifer Morningstar and killed by Niffty.

Appearance

Adam was an angel with a human appearance. Most of the time, he wore a mask that appeared similar to other Exorcists, though with normal-looking eyes and golden facial expressions. The mask also held a pair of horns similar to an Exorcist, albeit longer, smoother, and with a golden ornamental attachment on the tips. Under his mask, he is revealed to be a fair-skinned angel with golden-yellow eyes that have dark bags underneath, a stubble-beard on his chin, and slightly messy, short cedar-brown colored hair. He also had a pair of large and golden wings on his back. In contrast to other angels that have appeared thus far, Adam's halo was bright gold in appearance, and similar to the Exorcists, has two spikes pointing up and down from each other, though these spikes are located at the front of his halo as opposed to the likes of Lute's halo, which has its spikes in the middle, joined by a small dot.

He wore a smooth white and golden cloak that appears to have a large 'A' symbol emblazoned on the front. His visible hands were black in appearance, and had gold-tipped spikes on the back of his collar.

In the final episode of season one, Lucifer mentions that Adam had "really let himself go", implying Adam had become overweight.

Background

From the dust of Earth, Adam and Lilith were the first humans created by the Angels, made to be equal and lived in the Garden of Eden. However, Adam wanted total control over Lilith, but she refused and left him for Lucifer Morningstar. Adam would later be given a new wife, Eve who together with would then conceive the first generation of humans.

At some point, Adam received divine ordainment and became an angel and the first human soul to enter Heaven.

In Heaven, Adam would suggest the Extermination to the High Seraphim Sera, which she reluctantly agreed to for the safety of Heaven, and he became the leader of his own military, the Exorcists. The only rule Sera ordered was that he was to keep it all a secret from everyone in Heaven, so the only people in Heaven who were allowed to know about the Extermination were Sera, Adam, and the Exorcists.

Later, Adam created the exorcists and named every one of them, including Lute and Vaggie. They are like children in a way.

Seven years prior to the first episode in the season, he and his ex-wife, Lilith, made a deal where she would be allowed to live in Heaven.

At some point, after Lute punished Vaggie for sparing a demon child by ripping her left eye and her wings off, Adam took her halo and the two left Vaggie in Hell.

In the first episode, Adam and Lucifer were set to meet in the Heaven Embassy, but Lucifer sent Charlie to meet with him instead. When they meet, Adam messed with Charlie twice; offering a handshake even though he was a hologram, and offering food when the food is also a hologram.

He wasted discussion time talking about his activities in Heaven until Charlie finally talks about having a solution to their "biggest problem", which is the overpopulation crisis in Hell. Charlie tries to explain her plan on rehabilitating Sinners, but Adam mocks the idea in a song and then states how he and the other Exorcists have moved the Extermination to take place a half year early because he "couldn't wait a whole year to slaughter those little demons". He then shoves Charlie out the door.

Later, he sits in a room watching a drone look for a deceased beheaded Exorcist, and once found reveals that in six months they intend on killing every Sinner to make sure there is none left alive to kill another Exorcist again.

In episode six during Charlie and Vaggie's visit in heaven, he and Lute recognized Vaggie and paid her a visit. He asked her to work with him during the hearing at the court or he would reveal her true origins to Charlie.

During the hearing, he was asked how human souls ascend, fumbling for a while before quickly writing a paper with three directives ("act selfless, don't steal, and stick it to the man"). While observing, he held his position that Sinners can't be redeemed despite Angel Dust's actions completing the three directives he had set out. During the debate, he accidentally revealed the Extermination to the court, and then revealed Vaggie's true nature to Charlie in retaliation, shocking her. After the court ruled that sinners cannot be redeemed, Adam threatened Charlie that during the Extermination, he would attack her Hotel first.

In the final episode of the season on Extermination day, Adam launched the attack on the Hotel first, as he previously threatened. He was shocked to see that the demons were using their own weapons against them. Angered and annoyed, he proceeded to destroy Alastor's shield and engaged the latter. After a brief confrontation he managed to seriously injure the Overlord, forcing him to flee from the battle.

Adam then attacked the demons, vaporizing Sir Pentious and his blimp. He is then attacked by Charlie but manages to gain the upper hand, but before he could strike a decisive blow, he was attacked by Lucifer, who easily defeated him.

Despite being badly injured, he still got up and berated Charlie and her companions. He rants, going on about how he started all of mankind and everything else on Earth and everybody should be worshipping him, only to be stabbed in the back repeatedly by Niffty, fatally wounding him and leaving him on the verge of death. In his final moments, he smiles at Lute before passing away.

Lute brings Adam's halo to Lilith, who is lounging on a beach in Heaven to let her know that his death meant their deal was over unless she goes down to Hell and stop her daughter. It's currently unknown what happened to his body as it was left in Hell.

Personality

Adam appeared very egotistical and unsympathetic. As the leader of his Exorcist army, he took his stance as the Exorcists' head figure very seriously, sending antagonistic threats towards demons and anyone for standing in their way or whoever disobeyed his command, as he did so with Vaggie for refusing to kill a Sinner, cutting her wings, and leaving her in Hell.

He also displayed traits of extreme narcissism and chauvinism, believing himself the perfect man due to being the first and claiming he had never made a mistake in his life, since he was the first man to be born on Earth, and he claimed that all the male bloodline came from him. His narcissism was so great that, upon his defeat, he refused to admit how far he had fallen and expressed a god-like complex by proclaiming his enemies should be grateful for him having fathered the beginning of humanity while demanding they worship him for his deeds.

Adam did not appear to be aware that his egotistical and depraved behavior towards Lilith was the cause of her leaving him. When meeting Charlie Morningstar, he didn't hate her for being a child of the woman he was married to before she fell in love with Lucifer, and was relatively patient with her, although remained dismissive of her suggestions. Adam was also sexist, constantly addressing other women as "bitches" and enjoyed their sexual depravity, as he admitted to Vaggie that her forbidden love relationship with Charlie was "hot as fuck", albeit it is unclear whether this was about their genders or them being angel and demon. Despite this, he seemed to have a good relationship with Lute, whom he seemed to have in very high esteem, even though he was her superior.

Despite his obliviousness, Adam did show moments of common sense and self-awareness, such as when the death of an Exorcist was discovered, he knew that if they decided to kill the Sinners now after just one week after the most recent Extermination, then demons would catch on to how Exorcists can be killed. Adam also knew when to slow down on his egoism, after inadvertently exposing the purpose of the Extermination to all the courts of Heaven, including Sera, the highest seraphim authority in Heaven and the one who ordered that no one but the Exorcists can know.

Adam may have enjoyed playing music, specifically with a guitar, as he outright claimed to be in a band. He also had a poor view of radio and stereos, telling Alastor those already belong to the past, considering them to be old and useless.

Adam was also quite cruel and sadistic, openly admitting in front of Charlie that he enjoyed killing demons, calling it entertainment, and tended to announce how many killed in the Extermination. He also dismissed Charlie's project of redemption not because he didn't believe in sinners being redeemed, because if she succeeded with that project he wouldn't be able to continue killing demons. His eagerness to kill demons and get his revenge was so big that he advanced the date of the next Extermination to six months instead of a year.

Despite his sadism and cruelty, Adam was capable of recognizing and praising the abilities of others, when he reunited with Vaggie he admitted she was one of the best exorcists he had under his command. He also genuinely commended Lute for killing 275 demons during the most recent extermination, and congratulated her with a fist bump. Adam also praised Vaggie for being Charlie's partner, albeit sarcastically.

Relationships

Eve - Eve is Adam's second wife. It is unknown what their relationship is like, but Adam openly talks about having sex with other women, possibly implying they are no longer together.

Lilith - Lilith was Adam's first wife, before she left him. Lilith was created alongside Adam, they were made to be equal, but Adam wanted Lilith to submit to him, Lilith refused and left him. Thousands of years later, Adam seems to have moved on, although he still refers to Charlie as "Lilith's little hottie", implying that he still remembers her. In in the final episode, it is revealed that Lilith made a deal with Adam and agreed to let her stay in Heaven, which shows that he still seemed to retain some affection, or respect, for Lilith.

Lucifer Morningstar - He holds particular disdain towards Lucifer, saying that he is the "most hated being in all of creation". He gets angry when Lucifer mentions both his wives, Lilith and Eve, saying that they didn't hate what "he had to offer", implying that Lucifer may have slept with Eve. They both fight and Adam was overwhelmed by Lucifer, but is stopped at the request of Charlie.

Charlie Morningstar - Charlie is the daughter of Adam's ex-wife, Lilith. Both share an antagonistic relationship. During their first meeting, Adam was initially friendly with Charlie, only to begin teasing her, openly and verbally mocking Charlie, as well as tricking her into shaking his hand, or offering her ribs when he was a hologram. Despite this, he admitted that he liked Hell's songs. When Charlie explained her dream of redeeming sinners, Adam laughed at her and announced that he loved killing her people and that the next Extermination would be in six months. When she meets him in "Welcome to Heaven", he would have kicked her out if it hadn't been for Lute advising him not to. During his private meeting with Vaggie, Adam admitted that he found Charlie attractive, and that he found his relationship with her former employee exciting. During her trial before Sera, Adam continually mocked Charlie, and at the end laughed at her as he declared that the Hazbin Hotel would be the first place he purges of Sinners. In the final episode, Charlie faced Adam in battle after the latter seemingly killed Sir Pentious, completely enraged and fueled by her hatred toward him. Despite her father beating Adam, Charlie stopped her father, saying that Adam has had enough, showing that she is willing to give her enemy mercy. Charlie was surprised by Adam's death at the hand's of Niffty.

Angel Dust - Although they have never interacted, Adam was aware of Angel Dust's existence and profession. During the meeting in Heaven's Courthouse, he openly mocks Angel and states that he is not worthy of redemption nor is he able to ascend into Heaven.

Alastor - In the final episode, Adam sees Alastor on the roof of the Hotel and recognized him as the conjurer of the Hotel's barrier, thus he flew down to deal with him. They traded insults while talking themselves up. They both battled and Adam was overwhelmed for a short brief amount of time until he said that he'll "wipe that shit-eating grin" off of Alastor's face because "radio is dead". He uses his guitar axe to break Alastor's microphone in half before striking him in the chest, overpowering him and nearly killing him. Upon Alastor's retreat, Adam laughs and says "bye, bitch".

Sir Pentious - In the last episode although he found Sir Pentious' attempt to attack him laughable after he vaporized him along with his blimp, he was aware that it "could've been ugly" if he hadn't noticed his war machine coming to strike him. In response to Pentious' apparent death, Charlie attacked Adam to fight him.

Nifty - After being humiliated and defeated by Charlie and Lucifer, Adam vented his anger against the Hazbin Hotel group, scolding them for not worshiping him because he was the one who created humanity. His speech, however, was unexpectedly interrupted by Niffty, who used her knife to sadistically stab Adam multiple times, ultimately killing him, causing Niffty to be recognized as Adam's murderer.

Humans - Adam is the progenitor of every human soul who ever lived. This extends to the souls in Heaven and the sinners of Hell. He is very proud of himself for starting humanity.

Sinners - Despite being his descendants, Adam sees no value in them. He hates them as he believes anyone who was sentenced to damnation in Hell deserved it. He uses the Extermination as entertainment so he could kill as many sinners as he liked every year. Regardless, he expects them to be thankful that he was their progenitor.

The Exorcists - The Exorcists are an army he leads every year during the Extermination. He has no issue kicking any out of Heaven for sparing a demon.

Lute - As his lieutenant, Lute is Adam's trusted subordinate that is always seen at his side. The two get along, with Adam praising Lute's kill count and affectionately calling her "Danger Tits" upon hearing her recent performance during the extermination. In their appearance in episode six, Adam and Lute are seen hanging out together while seemingly not on any official duty, suggesting that their relationship extends to a genuine friendship. During the same episode, Adam enthusiastically backs his lieutenant up when she argues against Charlie's case for redemption, where they both sing a reprise of Hell is Forever together. Despite their good working relationship, Lute isn't spared from Adam's arrogant attitude, being chided by her superior for "shushing" him and sarcastically rebuked for stating the obvious when she points out Alastor's barrier. Upon his defeat at the hands of Lucifer and then being mortally wounded by Niffty, Adam smiles gently while looking up at Lute as she tearfully screams his name, suggesting that he genuinely cared for her or at the very least, was moved or amused by her concern for him.

Vaggie - In episode six, Adam came to confront Vaggie while Charlie was out. He recognized her as one of his "top girls" during the past Exterminations until Vaggie spared a sinner and was stripped of her wings, halo, and her status. He named her after the vagina, claiming it's the best thing ever. He viewed Vaggie and Charlie's relationship as "hot as fuck" despite agreeing with Lute that it was "vile and blasphemous". He threatened to tell Charlie about Vaggie being an Exorcist if she didn't agree to help him and Lute win the court trial. At the end of the trial, he outright revealed to Charlie along with the whole court that Vaggie was an Exorcist. After the trial, he declares to purge the hotel first during the upcoming Extermination before sending Vaggie and Charlie back to Hell.In the last episode, before he and the Exorcist army heads down to Hell, he offers one million Heaven Bucks to the Exorcist who brings him Vaggie's head.

Sera - As seen in episode three, Adam proclaimed that Sera was his manager, and she was shown to ensure the childish commander stays on task. The two have opposite demeanors and seem to irritate each other despite being colleagues. When Adam proposed the extermination, Sera didn't like the bloodthirsty nature of it, but reluctantly authorized it for Heaven's safety; her one condition was to keep the extermination secret from the majority of Heaven. Adam continuously disappointed Sera when he doesn't prevent Charlie from getting involved or blurting about the extermination in the courthouse.

Abilities

Longevity - As told in "Overture", Adam had existed since the creation of the world, meaning he was at least thousands of years old and presumably was unable to die of old age.

Flight - Adam had a set of wings that he could use to fly at great speed. He could also remove a feather from his wings to use as a quill pen.

Immense strength - He was shown to be able to smash a light projector in front of him with brute strength in a moment of rage, and later shatter Alastor's barrier with a single punch. He was also shown to be strong enough to physically overpower Charlie, despite the latter assuming her full demon form. However, Charlie managed to use more of her demonic powers to stop him from punching Lucifer, utterly overpowering him and confusing him, indicating that he is only stronger than Charlie if she doesn't focus on all her power.

Enhanced endurance - Despite having not experienced pain for likely millennia, Adam was able to easily shrug off getting stabbed by Charlie with her trident despite saying that it hurt and he quickly retaliate after being repeatedly punched in the face by Lucifer.

Conjuration - Adam could summon objects as he pleased, summoning his guitar and physical Exorcist copies during Hell is Forever, a golden scroll informing Charlie of Heaven's decision to move up the next Extermination, and a piece of golden paper to write on in court.

Alteration - Adam also showed he could alter the objects he created, such as when he made his axe guitar larger while fighting Alastor.

Pyligenesis - Adam could create portals for other Angels to use, notably to transport himself and his Exorcist army to Hell at the start of each annual extermination. He also opened a portal to banish Charlie and Vaggie back to Hell in "Welcome to Heaven".

Angelic power - As an angel, he most likely possessed high angelic power, especially as the leader of the Exorcists. His strength was proven to be immense, surpassing all but the strongest of Demons as he was able to easily overwhelm both Alastor and later Charlie, who had assumed her full demon form, and would have won had Lucifer not interfered.

Photokinesis - Adam could fire blasts of holy light strong enough to vaporize Sir Pentious and his war machine in one small blast and slice tall buildings in half. He also showed he could channel his light through his guitar/axe to create powerful blades of light that were able to cut through Alastor's cane and through his fist to destroy demonic barriers. In "Overture", he created a giant bright orb of light above him while he was singing Hell is Forever.

Musical talent - He was capable of singing and in "Overture" was implied to have been part of a band.

Guitar-playing - Adam was talented at playing the guitar and did so seemingly whenever he could.

Axe proficiency - Adam wielded his guitar-axe with amazing skill as he could fight out and seriously wound Alastor during their duel.

Leadership - Adam appeared to be a competent and capable leader of the Exorcists, often personally leading them into battle. Additionally, Adam appears to genuinely care for his subordinates.

Strategic mind - In both "Overture" and "The Show Must Go On", Adam demonstrates sound and logical thinking both in and out of combat; in the former, Adam waits to begin the next extermination so as not to prematurely reveal his plan, while in the latter, Adam personally attacks high-threat targets to even the odds for his Exorcists, as seen with his battle with Alastor, since he recognized him as the conjurer of the hotel's barrier.
